Magic and superstitions have been associated with almost all
religions worldwide. Judaism is not any different. I'm not talking about the Kabbalah aspect of Judaism, but more of Jewish
curses, spells, astrology, symbols, and even ghosts and demons.
Jewish Magic is mentioned
as early as Deuteronomy chapter 18, in which many astrologers, diviners, exorcists, and magicians are named (although the
magicians, who could misuse it, are feared and despised on.) During that period the most common form of magic was the love
spell, which was associated mostly to women. Woe
to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims!
The
crack of whips, the clatter of wheels, galloping horses and jolting chariots!
Charging
cavalry, flashing swords and glittering spears! Many causalities, piles of dead, bodies
without number, people stumbling over the corpses-
all because of the wanton lust
of a harlot, alluring, the mistress of sorceries, who enslaved nations in her prostitution and
peoples in her witchcraft
-Nahum 3 (1-4)
