A spell is a spoken word, phrase, or poem which is recited (usually in a ritual) in order
to obtain a specific result. The bible and Jewish mysticism underline that God created the universe by "speech acts," entailing
that out words are powerful and can have some sort of constructive, and in some cases, destructive, power.
| | There are three main points Jews believe in a spell:
1) There is a special power in the name of God
2) There is also a special power
in the words God speaks (Torah & Hebrew Bible)
3) Using Hebrew letters in certain
patterns can create special powers
Spells are the leading elements in Jewish magic. Spells that appear in
the Talmud mostly serve for healing and protection. There are also spells for the vocation of angels, and love spells, although
many rabbinic authorities do not endorse these types of incantations.
